Lesson I:
The Alphabet

In classical times, the Latin alphabet had 23 letters: the letters of the English alphabet excluding j, v and w.

The symbol v was the capital form of the letter u, but later came into use as the consonantal u. The symbol j came into use as the consonantal i, but was almost entirely discarded in modern Latin texts.

The letter w occasionally appears in "Latinized" forms of modern names. The letters y and z occur only in words of Greek origin.
